The Young Saint John the Baptist
The Young Saint John the Baptist, Antonio Rossellino, National Gallery of Art, After Treatment
The accompanying marble base to the statue of The Young Saint John the Baptist by Antonio Rosellino is not original to the sculpture.
However, four old, discolored fills were present on the front edges of the base. Based on photographs from 1972, the fills have darkened from their original appearance over time. The painted surfaces of the fills and the fills themselves are slightly soluble in acetone and ethanol.
To start the treatment of the base, it was cleaned lightly overall with cotton swabs dampened with water. Then the fills were softened with a poultice of acetone for several minutes before they were removed or reduced mechanically with a scalpel. This had to be repeated multiple times during the treatment to keep the fills soft enough to remove.
Before new fill material was applied, the marble was sealed with 10% PVA-AYAA. The wax-resin fill material used was one that had been used on prior treatments in the lab and consisted of 9 parts PVA-AYAC, 3 parts A-C copolymer 540, 1 part A-C copolymer 580, and 1/2 part Irganox 1075. The fill material was pressed into the primed losses with a tacking iron and when cool, shaped with a scalpel and fine sanding tools.
Finally, watercolors and Golden Fluid Acrylic paints were used to adjust the color to that of the surrounding marble.
